Rotimatic Reviews 2022: About the product

The Rotimatic is literally a robot of an appliance that can make rotis out of dry flour within 90 seconds. It is a hi-tech device that comes with 10 motors, 15 sensors, and 300 moving parts along with a Wifi connection (yes, you read that right) to prepare “your daily bread”.

Making a roti in the Rotimatic, which is actually similar to mixing, kneading and baking a loaf in a container, is undoubtedly a complex process. And the device achieves precisely that by pulling all the ingredients: flour, water and oil to knead, roll and bake your rotis within its unit.

About the package

The Rotimatic is pretty huge and heavy. It isn’t exactly on the portable side and does take quite an effort to move around, not to mention at least 2 people to lift it. The machine itself, when unpacked, weighs approximately 20 kg. It takes up a lot of space as well, so it isn’t space-efficient for that matter, with a footprint of 40 x 40 cm.

This thing can be pretty hard to handle if you have to whip it off a higher counter every time you mean to use it.

What do you get in the box?

Unboxing this would be a pleasant experience for you and it definitely feels like unpacking a luxurious, high-end product. The entire unit has got a really nice feel to it and includes all the essential things that you need to make it work.

You do get the following things in the box:

  • The central mixing and cooking unit
  • 3 separate containers for oil, water, and flour which fit with the main unit
  • Cleaning brushes
  • A quick-start guide
  • A detailed user manual
  • Required certificates of authentication

I like how they include all the information and steps for operating the device. The detailed user manual is pretty beneficial and it even comes with tips and tricks for better management and handling.

Although the device in itself isn’t dishwasher safe, the manual does educate you in the ways of cleaning it correctly. The cleaning brushes further ensure that the product doesn’t get damaged while cleaning.

You also get all the certificates of the product’s authentication. Always look for these required documents. If they aren’t there in the box, do return the product to the seller along with everything that’s there inside it. NOTE: Always check for proofs of authenticity and purchase from authorized sellers.

How does the Rotimatic work?

The mechanism of the Rotimatic is unlike anything you’ve ever seen in a standard bread-maker before. It is futuristic, tech-savvy and unbelievably innovative.

To use it, you have to pair it up with its companion app (iOS or Android) and use that to connect it to your Wifi. The connectivity features are based on the Internet of Things (IoT) technology and offers seamless functionality using your phone. The machine also downloads new firmware automatically and allows remote diagnostics.

The app offers a decent user instruction manual as well, which you can print out if you want to. The app also provides you with Rotimatic recipes, but it would have been better if the machine and app made use of the connectivity even more. For instance, an Amazon Dash-style button that lets you instantly order more flour when you’re running low.

The unit works in two parts. First, you put the ingredients (oil, water, and flour) in the receptacles at the top of the unit. The ingredients are then drawn in, mixed and kneaded on the right part of the unit. Finally, the dough is rolled out and baked on the left.

It is as brilliant to watch as it is to start. Merely turn the Rotimatic on, tell it what type of flour you’re using and set a few preferences, such as the preferred thickness for your rotis, how much you’d prefer cooking them (from tender to crispy), and the amount of oil that you want them to contain. As soon as you’ve done all of these steps, the device will begin to run.

The machine takes about 6 minutes in total to come up to the temperature. After that, select the number of rotis you require and press “play” on the unit, and they’re going to churn out delicious rotis automatically every 90 seconds.

The process is a visual delight with the dough whizzing around through the square window, a pair of robotic arms kicking in to roll the dough flat. And then you can watch the rotis being forwarded and cooked in the main unit.

The machine will also get on with preparing the next batch of dough while the bread bakes.

My experience with the product

I was quite intrigued by this product when I first heard about it from one of my friends. On seeing it on the screen, I knew I had to try it out. But there was one problem: the Rotimatic costs around a full $1000! Yeah, although I can literally hear the sound of your eyeballs popping out while reading this, let me just say that I did go ahead and make the investment.

Although it took a long time for the product to be shipped and delivered, it came with all the essentials and documents safely contained within the package.

I was really disappointed with the weight and dimensions of the product: pretty heavy to carry and takes a ton of space. Not exactly the kind I was looking for my small kitchen.

BUT! All my complaints and doubts faded when I started it up. I had a tiny connectivity problem while pairing it up, which didn’t take long to sort out.

The Rotimatic performs exceptionally well. I could make 10 spinach rotis within 8 minutes to 10 minutes, and I couldn’t have asked for more!

But the other thing that I liked is that you could also make short pizza bread, pooris, and parathas (other Indian variations of roti) with this device. It works smoothly and noiselessly to bring you wholesome, delicious food.

Is the Rotimatic worth the price?

In all certainty, $1000 for the Rotimatic is quite a high price. Some may find it tough to justify (or maybe not so much if they’re in the mood to spend), even if the device does what it promises.

The truth is that it’s better than other sophisticated roti-makers out there and brings everything: the recipes, procedures and intricate features to the table. Still, given it’s an appliance that specializes in one thing alone, I would have liked it a little cheaper.

What the heck is a roti anyway?

Rotis! A globally popular Indian food and a staple for the natives of that country.

It’s one of those things that’s not only delicious and healthy but is also immensely versatile when it comes to the culinary fusion of the East and West on the plate.

So, what exactly is a roti?

A kind of flatbread variation to the Mexican tortilla in many ways, rotis are essentially made with whole wheat flour, or “atta” as they’re called in Hindi, the Indian national language. It is also called “chapati” in India. You could also make rotis out of multiple substitutes like pulse flour or other wholemeal flour.

But, the tricky part in all of it is to make one!

And why’s the shape important?

The roti is made out of a flour dough and is flattened using a rolling pin till it’s flat and nicely round. The shape is of utmost importance when it comes to making rotis.

If your roti looks anything like a place on the world map, then it’s not going to be called a roti. The roti also has to be flat enough to puff up when it’s cooked in the oven or on a heated plate.
